  • Since it is Bank Holiday, it must be the Ambridge Single Wicket Competition, and the competitive spirit runs high, particularly between siblings Pip and Josh and Ed and Will. Pip is in her usual self-centred mode, telling David she will have no time to help with Open Farm Sunday as she has so much revision to do. Josh is quick to offer his services in her place. Anything to score a point.
  • Josh faces Pip, but is caught by Tom, to Pip’s delight, though she is soundly beaten by Rob Titchener in the next round.
  • Clarrie has divided loyalties as she watches her sons compete. Will faces Ed, but is out l. b. w. It is, of course, a poor umpiring decision, as Will is quick to tell people, but it means that Ed is through to the final, facing Rob.
  • Josh is anxious to tell Neil his plans for the hens, but Neil is preoccupied with making the announcements, so Josh’s ideas will just have to wait.
  • Newcomer Rob beats Ed to become Ambridge’s 2013 Single Wicket champion. At least he buys the drinks. Pip commiserates with Ed, and they agree that it’s not taking part that counts – it’s beating your brother.
