Tony makes his feelings very plain

Radio Times: It is a busy time for Jennifer and Tony gets things underway.

Characters: , , , ,
  • Brian calls on Tony to suggest that he might offer Jennifer more support in finding a replacement for Elona. He gets a very churlish response, with Tony accusing him of thinking himself the Squire of Ambridge, as Jim’s article suggested. All Tony’s old resentments come to the surface, and Brian is much relieved when the valuer from Rodways arrives, giving Brian the chance to beat a retreat. Alec the valuer goes over the details with Tony, and suggests that he has a look for any more old milk churns. Having allowed Joe to take one of his hands as a favour, Tony is galled to discover that they fetch around £40 for use as planters.
  • Feeling somewhat bruised from his encounter with Tony, Brian rings Elizabeth to ask if she could squeeze him and Jennifer in at the Lower Loxley Fine Dining night, for their anniversary. It is completely sold out, but since Brian is family, Elizabeth will squeeze them in.
  • Jennifer and Adam prepare the caravans for the pickers. When Brian tells his wife the good news about their anniversary dinner, he is in receipt of his second churlish response for today. Jennifer is far too busy to think of going out. Adam has the solution, though. Brian will take over bed-making duties so that Jennifer can get ready.
  • Brian’s duvet cover skills are noticeably lacking as he gives Adam a hand with the caravans, but he comments on the fact that the pickers this year are predominantly female. Will that mean hassle for Adam? Not as much as last year’s male pickers did, replies Adam with feeling.
  • Angry Jennifer calls on Tony to demand that he find a replacement for Elona. Tony points out that he is very busy. So am I, retorts the first lady of Ambridge, though she is lost for a reply when Tony asks exactly what she is doing that makes her so busy.
  • In conversation with Elizabeth, Brian discovers that Shula is having a family drinks party. Asking Jennifer why they are not going, she tells him that she refuses to go because Jim will be there. She is up to here with family – an opinion Brian has reason to share.
