Tom wins the argument over non-organic ready-meals. Darrell still seeks work.

Radio Times: Elona tries to be proactive. And will Tom’s arguments win the day?

Characters: , , , , ,
  • Neither Brenda nor Tom have an easy day ahead: Brenda has Lilian to contend with and Tom is planning to present to his parents the results of his market research and financial projections. Elona catches Brenda en route and asks if she can put in a good word for Darrell if Amside have any work coming up.
  • Although Pat and Tony grudgingly admit that he has done his homework, Toms pitch is received with mild hostility and sarcasm: profit is king over principle. It was a bit tactless of him to declare as a ‘no brainer’ his conclusion that the ready meals should not be organic, rather ‘welfare friendly’ – the next best thing. They give their approval but they are not happy; he is slowly undoing everything they have stood for.
  • Brenda needs a drink. What an afternoon! Matt bit her head off because she asked about work for Darrell, while Tweedle-dee (a fine way to refer to Tom’s aunt) scrutinised every receipt.
  • When Darrell learns of Elona’s approach to Brenda he is furious: he would not work for Amside if they were the last employer on earth. Elona did not realise he felt so strongly; she is worried where the money is coming from; his dignity won’t pay the bills. Darrell has delivered his fliers and he did speak to Paul but he has no work up here in the foreseeable future. Nevertheless Darrell is determined that this family will not go under.
