  • Alan calls at the Bull to check that all’s in order for the Harvest Supper. He’ll come back later to give Jolene a hand. Kenton arrives, too, and when he hears that Kathy still hasn’t sorted out fliers for the Autumn menus, he offers to get them done on his way to Jaxx.
  • Jennifer makes apple pies for the supper, and moans to Peggy that she can’t work on the website because Kate wants her computer. Peggy can understand Kate needing to stay in touch with her family; Sipho is too young to be left by his mother. Jennifer remarks on Kate’s bravado.
  • Kate arrives home and treats everyone to her opinions. She can’t understand why Jennifer won’t let Ruairidh go to the Harvest Supper on a school night. It’s why middle-class English children are so neurotic; they’re mollycoddled, whereas Kate’s children have stood up for themselves from infancy. Peggy gently puts an end to the tirade, just as Brian returns with another present for Kate – a laptop. She’s delighted, but not as delighted as her mother.
  • Brian’s on good form at the supper, and even takes part in the pub games. He’s got good reason; Matt has formally agreed to set up the new company.
  • Because it’s quiet at Jaxx, Kenton drops in at the Bull with the finished fliers. He asks Jolene why Kathy is so busy. Jolene is hesitant about gossiping, but quickly realises that Kenton knows all about Jamie’s problems. She knows Sid would have approved of a man-to-man chat, if Kenton could manage that. He will – but he knows he must be careful not to upset Kathy any further. Nevertheless, he owes it to Jamie.
