Change is in the air for Tom and Brenda. Brian sees no change in Matt.

Radio Times: Jennifer and Brian wonder if prison has changed Matt, and Brenda and Tom are feeling the strain.

Characters: , , , , , ,
  • Brian is not keen to go to supper at the Dower House after the dreadful drinks party. The ever-romantic Jenny is sure Matt has changed for the better while in prison. Brian will believe that when he sees it.
  • Tom finds an angry note from Brenda saying there was no food in the house when she left for work. He rings her, but gets a spiteful earful for his pains. Long-suffering Tom says he’ll do a big shop and cook her a meal to celebrate the end of the week.
  • Tom stocks up at the village shop, but in vain. Brenda rings to say she has to work late, but at least she apologises for her earlier outburst. Never one to waste food, Tom invites Helen over. When Helen tells him she’s pregnant, Tom is uncharacteristically lost for words.
  • Matt’s in expansive mood over supper, proposing a toast to Jenny and Brian to thank them for taking care of Lilian during his enforced absence. Lilian blurts out their plans for a joint business venture, which causes Brian some wry amusement. Later Lilian apologises to Matt, who brushes her concerns aside.
  • When an exhausted Brenda gets home, she and Tom are forced to admit they’re not coping with her new job. Tom wonders whether she shouldn’t stay over during the week. Brenda jumps at the idea – she’ll ask around the office.
  • Jennifer’s rosy pink cloud continues to obscure her judgement. Maybe Lilian’s involvement with Paul is responsible for Matt’s new protectiveness. Cynical Brian just thinks prison hasn’t changed Matt one bit.
