  • Do guinea-pigs have souls? So can they go to heaven? That’s the question George has put to his grandad. Neil ducks the question.
  • Elona is moving out. Darrell is upset that he said goodbye to Anna this morning in such a rush. He can phone them tonight and Rosa will call after work tomorrow but it’s a poor substitute for seeing them every day.
  • Jim is updating Clarrie on the contact Jennifer has had from an ancestor of Zebedee Tring; she is hoping for a donation from him. Clarrie thinks that the likes of Brian and Jennifer, closer to home, could dip into their deep pockets. Jim lets it slip that Christine’s flower arrangement for Grange Spinney is to be all white.
  • With one last instruction – to cut the grass – Elona is off. Darrell tries to change her mind. Is this really what she wants? But she is not for turning; it’s too late. Their farewells are interrupted by Neil, who has been a good friend to them; in this vein he offers to buy Darrell a pint at lunchtime.
  • As soon as Jim leaves her, Clarrie arranges to meet Nic in the pub at lunchtime; they have hit a problem. Neil is already there, administering beer and sympathy. When Clarrie arrives she explains the dilemma to Nic: two all-white arrangements just won’t do. Nic doesn’t see a problem about talking to Christine but Nic has a lot to learn about village politics. This competition is bringing out the worst in Clarrie; she bites Nic’s head off when she suggests that maybe they could change their design, adding some colour.
