  • Ruth chats to Pip as they tend the new calves. Ruth has bought Pip some washing machine tablets in preparation for her placement in Yorkshire, but somehow Pip is not remotely interested or grateful. Later she admits that she is concerned about whether her relationship with Spencer will stand the strain. In her best soft and caring voice, Ruth points out that if they survive the separation, they will be all the stronger, just as she and David were – and they had no mobiles or internet.
  • Brian tells Jenny about Martyn and the golf club. Brian feels quite sorry for Kathy. Jenny is relieved that Christian, one of the pickers, is hard at work in the garden, but just as Lilian rings her sister, Brian is impatient to be off to the dairy.
  • In the dairy, far from overseeing the mega-dairy, Rob is on the phone to Helen, wanting her to come over this evening. Helen is worried that Pat, in the next room, will hear, but Rob, sounding ever more controlling, insists that she must come. He won’t give up. When Brian arrives, he is pleased to hear that they may be in full production by Christmas. Rob has sourced hundreds of cows from Germany and Hungary.
  • No sooner has Brian left than Rob rings Helen again and virtually orders her to be there at seven. Pat overhears the end of the conversation, and a flustered Helen stammers out a story about a jewellery maker who is running classes Helen would like to join. It could be twice a week. Would Pat mind looking after Henry? It sounds as though she would mind, but then Pat says she is pleased Helen is going out. Somehow she seems to be trying to convince herself of this.
  • Brian discovers Jenny washing her roses. Christian managed to spray them with weed killer. However is she to produce an entry for the village show? Brian asks about Lilian, but there is little news except that she and Matt are having a wonderful time in London. Brian just hopes Lilian is keeping an eye on the business.
  • Rob and Helen laugh over the way Helen has deceived Pat. As Rob thinks about starting supper, Helen has a better idea. She will go for a bath and Rob could join her.
