Characters: , , , , , , ,
  • Lilian is very angry that Justin has offered an interview to Rob to be manager of the Estate. Justin insists he is a clever chap but Lilian says Brian thinks he left Berrow Farm under a cloud. They part coldly.
  • George is still obsessing about his book “Danny, the Champion of the World”. But Clarrie realises that they have been teaching George about poaching. It doesn’t matter what they say, it is stealing and against the law and Clarrie doesn’t want them telling George any different.
  • Alice tries to interest Pip in her new job while they are at The Bull but Pip is clearly distracted. She keeps looking over Alice’s shoulder. Finally she admits it is Toby she is looking for. She tells Alice that she has been involved in a “no strings” relationship but on Monday Toby behaved really oddly, just because she took a call from Matthew about a problem with his herd. Alice says he is jealous. In her experience with men, they only go off the deep end for no reason when they care. Pip is startled to think Toby might care about her.
  • Later, Justin and Lilian have supper. It’s a very simple meal. But Justin cheers it up with a bottle of champagne. He says it is by way of an apology. He shouldn’t have spoken to her like that and Lilian agrees she went too far. Justin concedes that Lilian has a point about Titchener. His leaving Berrow was “indistinct” so when he comes to see Justin on Friday, he will grill him on what happened between him and Charlie.
  • Clarrie finds a depressed Joe in the garden. She tells him he will catch his death and he says he should be so lucky. He reminisces about his times at Grange Farm and remembers Billy Thompkins who was the expert with ferrets but who died in Italy in 1943. Eddie joins them and they go off on their usual rant about Grange Farm being their land which was stolen from them. Clarrie reinforces the point that they shouldn’t be stuffing George’s head with romantic nonsense. The last thing they need is another thief in the family. Clarrie tries to cheer them up with talk of Ed’s ram. Ed reckons it’s a new start but Joe doesn’t buy it. He still whines about being thrown off his own land. And he isn’t interested in sheep or new starts. He’s interested in his rights and it’s his right to die on his own land.
