Phoebe gets into Oxford; Josh does well and decides on a gap year.

Radio Times: It is the day of reckoning for Phoebe and Josh, and Carol has cause for reflection.

Characters: , , , , , ,
  • David is furious about Josh’s results. They are better than anyone expected and better than Pip’s. 2 Bs and a C. But he still doesn’t want to go to university. David sees him as a spoiled brat. He doesn’t recognise the advantages he’s got. Jill says he needs to be careful. If he carries on shouting he will lose him. They need to compromise.
  • Phoebe and Jennifer are waiting to open Phoebe’s results when Brian interrupts. She got 3 As and an A star. She was disappointed that she didn’t get an A star in history but it is enough for Oxford.
  • Carol and Jill talk about the results. Carol remembers how hard it was with Anna’s results. She has always been a perfectionist. Carol knows she is looking forward to her dinner with Max. Jill also says that Henry has sent a postcard from Tenby. She is so glad Anna is acting for Helen. In a few weeks Helen should be free and back with Henry. Carol isn’t so sure. Anna works hard but she isn’t settled. Maybe the dinner with Max will sort it.
  • Josh and Phoebe have a quick conversation. Phoebe has now decided on Oxford though Josh has decided against University. He wants to cut himself off from Brookfield. Phoebe says he is better than this. He needs to find a compromise. That’s what adults do.
  • David and Josh have a strained conversation but he manages to say that even though he doesn’t agree with his decision, they respect it. Josh then says that he has asked Felpersham to defer for a year. He wants to stay at Brookfield but doesn’t expect to be paid. So it is resolved in a hug.
