  • Retirement hangs heavy on Bert’s hands, so he comes up to Brookfield to look at the tractor. David thinks he could help to move lambing pens while he’s there. Tentatively, Ruth asks David if he’d like to look at the information she’s found about hedge planting. David is very keen – they’ll do it after supper.
  • Alistair is making final preparations for the Cricket Club dinner to be held in Jack’s honour. Most of Ambridge are going, and all looking forward to it.
  • Still desperate for a drink, Lilian helps Peggy choose a new tie for Jack. Since Peggy won’t allow her to go near alcohol, Lilian has to content herself with village gossip. Peggy is affronted by the idea of Tom and Brenda living together in one of the holiday cottages, but unsurprised to hear that Brian is playing Debbie and Adam off against one another.
  • Poor Lilian is thwarted again when she tries to buy chocolate liqueurs in the village shop; Susan won’t sell them to her. They are interrupted by Alistair, who lets it slip that Christopher has a new girlfriend. When Susan hears she’s from Meadow Rise, she’s not impressed.
  • Not only does David agree to look at the DEFRA site, he brings a bottle of wine along. He’s very keen on the hedge idea, so much so that Ruth is lost for words,
  • Peggy finds Jack in a state of great distress. He claims to know nothing about the Cricket Club dinner, and is panic stricken at the whole idea. Peggy tries to calm and reassure him, but Jack is adamant. He won’t go.
