Olwen’s move to Bridge Farm is fraught with difficulty; Fallon seems not to share Harrison’s views on marriage; Emma seems to be burning her candle at both ends.

Radio Times: Pat helps a friend in need and Harrison has a bad day

Characters: , , , , , ,
  • At Bridge Farm, Helen explains how pleased she is with the responses to her recent survey of course participants. Just then, a very tired looking Emma arrives for her shift at the Tea Rooms. She has Keira in tow. She’s going to spend the day with Helen but doesn’t sound as though she’s looking forward to the experience. Additionally, Emma’s glittery top caused comment. As Pat rushes off to The Elms, Emma explains that Keira’s become very clingy recently and insists on spending the night in her parents’ bed.
  • Harrison tells Fallon about a tough case he’s had at work involving an unmarried couple. There had been a car crash and the man had been fatally injured but as they weren’t married, his next of kin were taken to be his parents with whom he’d not spoken for years. Harrison had to escort the woman away from her partner. Just then, Emma turns up for work. Fallon asks her to set about serving customers. And was that glitter on her top? Harrison makes a strong point that marriage serves to help in such situations giving next of kin rights.
  • Pat meets a very sick sounding Olwen at The Elms. She has a terrible cough and is apparently still living in her car. She won’t hear of asking for a room at the hostel. She says that if she needs a doctor, she can always call in at A&E. As she gets up to leave, it’s clear that she’s in no state to go anywhere on her own.
  • Helen calls into the Tea Room and orders food while explaining that Keira is just fine; there’s really no need to worry. She moves away, to take a call from Pat. Emma asks Fallon to help with Helen’s order, but she clearly has her mind on other things. Pat meanwhile, breaks the news to Helen that she’s bringing Olwen home for a few days. Tony isn’t too happy but she knew that Helen would understand. Helen doesn’t sound over the moon about things either. Fallon explains to Emma about Harrison’s thoughts regarding marriage. She’s worried that he may propose and she’s not too sure that she fancies being a Mrs anybody at present. Life is good just as it is. Emma misses her point altogether.
  • Pat and Olwen arrive at Bridge Farm. Pat suggests that she take a bath and borrow some clothes while her own are laundered. Helen arrives and is introduced. She learns that her boys have previously met Olwen. As she heads off to the bathroom, she tells Helen that her mother is a good woman. When she’s gone, Helen lets Pat know in no uncertain terms that she’s not at all happy with the situation and that they all needed time to think things through. Henry in particular needs a safe space. Pat reluctantly agrees, but it’s only for a few days until she’s better. Where’s the harm in that?
