  • It’s been a long night and Bert looks exhausted. He has been making nest boxes. Now he and Carole are absorbed in plans for his garden. She thinks the visitors will be enchanted when he opens it, which he decides to do on the very same day that Lynda is opening hers: Freda was a big fan of the Queen, so opening the garden on HM’s birthday will be a fitting tribute to his own queen.
  • It’s official: the fire at Hollowtree was arson. One end was burning intensely, probably with the aid of petrol. A text from the driver announces that the hens will be there within the hour. David is impressed with the new hen palace – a bit cramped perhaps but only temporary. Let’s tow it into position.
  • Shula and Carole are sorting the wardrobe for Lynda’s pageant. They talk about Bert; how can they help? The garden is a positive outlet. Carrying on can bring him peace; he’ll get through in time. They have done as much as they can for now; no doubt Lynda will have something to say about the costumes.
  • With the hens settled in, it’s time for the brothers Fairbrother to sort their own new accommodation. Toby cheekily enquires about Rickyard Cottage, Pip being away. David doesn’t take the hint but recommends the B&B at Ambridge Hall. Rex is against this: they must save every penny. So Toby must be a happy camper.
  • On the way home Bert gets the ok from David about opening his garden. He invites David in for a cuppa but a text from Ruth sends him scurrying away. Another time. Yes, repeats Bert sadly, another time.
